Audi HSS Sailing Center is very pleased to announce that our long-term Elliott 6m corporate partner DHL has decided to continue the mutually beneficial partnership! It is very encouraging to notice that there are still companies out there who believe in the future and are brave enough to make investments and commitments despite the current challenging environment – we are convinced that these will emerge as winners in the long run! The match is also quite perfect as many might have noticed that the members at the sailing center are not either afraid of delivering in challenging conditions. The DHL corporate partnership with the Audi HSS Sailing Center has continued since 2011.
Over 100 visitors came to hear about Audi HSS Sailing Center and to try our boats for free.
Audi HSS Sailing Center arranged a Try Out Day in cooperation with Skiffer Liuskaluoto restaurant on Saturday May 10th. For beginners and sailors alike, participants didn’t need any previous sailing experience to join. This was a great opportunity to get to know about basic courses, fleet and match race trainings and other activities at Sailing Center.
The Try Out day started with a thick fog, which luckily turned into sunshine around 14 in the afternoon. The day was a success and about 100 people got a chance to try sailing, many for the very first time. All classes of the Sailing Center were out – SM40, Elliott 6m, 606 and Laser 16. The wind was very easy in the morning and afternoon, only 3 m/s. All participants had the chance to enjoy the after sail at Skiffer Liuskaluoto restaurant with special Try-out day treatment and prices.
The camera crew of Merimaili was filming the Try Out Day and interviewed Sailing Center members and the Try Out Day participants on board and on shore for their TV-episode about boating and on water sports. The first screening is shown on JIM on Saturday May 17th at 08:20 and a rerun on Sunday May 18th at 08:20. You can find the series from last summer at ruutu.fi where this summer’s series will be repeated also.
This was the third year when Sailing Center organized the test day, and judging from the smiles on the faces, this tradition will continue also next year. Huge thanks to the skippers and on shore volunteer organizers!

We had to move the Laser16 training from Monday to Friday. This is because of the schedules of our coaches. We now have, like last year Ville Väresmaa and Pasi Palmu for the 606s, Elliotts and SM40s. And we are happy announce Nicke Borenius for the Laser16s. Nicke has been coaching our Laser 16 sailors earlier also and got a lot of great feedback so we’re happy to have him back! The new weekly program
- Mondays: Elliot 6m Center Cup Races.
- Tuesdays: 606. Fleet racing tactics and boat speed.
- Wednesdays: HSS Wednesday race, all boat classes and skill levels welcome. Food, drinks and socializing afterwards.
- Thursday: Elliott 6m. Match racing tactics and boat handling.
- Fridays: Separate SM40 training and races for more experienced match race teams.
- Fridays: Laser 16. Boat handling and maneuvers: an easy way to enter the world of sailing, even with little or no sailing experience.
Get excited for the new season!
As we are optimists, we hope that on 12th April the waters will be open and we can start our talkoo-efforts (for non-Finnish-speakers: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communal_work) to get everything ready. What this means in practice (where and what hour), we will inform you closer to the events, but we have reserved the weekends 12-13, 19-20 and 26-27 of April for these Talkoos. Please mark them down.
Juho Karhu is starting as the AUDI HSS Sailing Center Manager in April. Juho has been an active member and is already a familiar face in the Center. He will start orienting to the job while still on the other side of the globe in Australia.
Juho an active sailor and a long time-member of HSS and has been with the Center already when there was a separate TRC for Laser16’s and also in Match Race Center. The Center Manager will coordinate Sailing Center’s courses, weekly trainings, boat maintenance, volunteer activities, races and events. In addition to this the tasks include member recruitment and management, contacts with the other HSS committees and corporate cooperation of the Center.
The Center will still remain a volunteer-run organization with voluntary talkoo work being the main driving force behind it. But with Center Manager we get much needed help and improvement in serving our members and in running our Center. “My job will be to try and make things run smoother and make life and sailing at the Center easier for us all.” Juho says.
Congratulations and welcome!
