Laser 16 training moved

We had to move the Laser16 training from Monday to Friday. This is because of the schedules of our coaches. We now have, like last year Ville Väresmaa and Pasi Palmu for the 606s, Elliotts and SM40s. And we are happy announce Nicke Borenius for the Laser16s. Nicke has been coaching our Laser 16 sailors earlier also and got a lot of great feedback so we’re happy to have him back! The new weekly program

  • Mondays: Elliot 6m Center Cup Races.
  • Tuesdays: 606. Fleet racing tactics and boat speed.
  • Wednesdays: HSS Wednesday race, all boat classes and skill levels welcome. Food, drinks and socializing afterwards.
  • Thursday: Elliott 6m. Match racing tactics and boat handling.
  • Fridays: Separate SM40 training and races for more experienced match race teams.
  • Fridays: Laser 16. Boat handling and maneuvers: an easy way to enter the world of sailing, even with little or no sailing experience.

Get excited for the new season!

Spring 2014 – Boats in the water talkoos

As we are optimists, we hope that on 12th April the waters will be open and we can start our talkoo-efforts (for non-Finnish-speakers: to get everything ready. What this means in practice (where and what hour), we will inform you closer to the events, but we have reserved the weekends 12-13, 19-20 and 26-27 of April for these Talkoos. Please mark them down.

Weekly Wednesday Races 2014

The Wednesday evening racing tradition started at HSS before the World War II. We want to fill as many boats as possible to go out in friendly racing.

Last fall we had a great interest on these races with especially L16 and 606 classes. In 2014 we will draw also the Elliotts and SM40s in. The race will be organized together with the classic boats and club committee, ensuring eye candy such as 8 meters and 6 meters on the same starting line with us. There will also be a regular BBQ party and drinks afterwards.

There will be a class specific Wednesday race ranking, but Wednesdays are all about socializing and the real winners are the ones that have the best stories of their performance after racing! Some of the races will be held in sprint (short course) format while others will have longer courses. Especially the latter is also good practise also for experienced match racers as wind shifts and big scale tactics play a bigger role compared to maneuvers.

We also invite 606s from neighbouring clubs to join in! Skipper’s meeting can be done via phone and you’re more than welcome to join us for the after sail party too.

More information, Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions will be coming to the Events page before the beginning of season. Subscribe to the newsletter to get notified instantly when this happens.

Match Race Center Cups 2014

The Match Race Center Cups will start on May 5 and run through the summer. The amount of Center Cups has been increased to 10 to allow for increased number of races per team. The Center Cups will mostly be sailed with Elliots but an occasional 606 Center Cup will be held also.  The Center Cups will be organized in the same way as previous seasons with the teams acting as umpires and race committee when not sailing.

All dates are already up on the Events page. NoR and additional information will be published closer to the season.

Juho Karhu new Audi HSS Sailing Center Manager

Juho Karhu is starting as the AUDI HSS Sailing Center Manager in April. Juho has been an active member and is already a familiar face in the Center. He will start orienting to the job while still on the other side of the globe in Australia.

Juho an active sailor and a long time-member of HSS and has been with the Center already when there was a separate TRC for Laser16’s and also in Match Race Center. The Center Manager will coordinate Sailing Center’s courses, weekly trainings, boat maintenance, volunteer activities, races and events. In addition to this the tasks include member recruitment and management, contacts with the other HSS committees and corporate cooperation of the Center.

The Center will still remain a volunteer-run organization with voluntary talkoo work being the main driving force behind it. But with Center Manager we get much needed help and improvement in serving our members and in running our Center. “My job will be to try and make things run smoother and make life and sailing at the Center easier for us all.” Juho says.

Congratulations and welcome!
